What is Inside Wiring?

Inside Wiring is the telephone wiring that runs from your telephone service connection point (usually a box on the outside of your building) to the telephone jacks or outlets inside your building.

For SDSL/Multiple IP IDSL and Single IP IDSL (144K only) locations, AT&T provides 15 minutes inside wiring as part of the installation. If this is not sufficient, the technician may need to perform additional inside wiring to complete the installation or may require additional time to locate the NID at your specified location. If you require or request additional inside wiring, you will be charged $100 per hour for additional inside wiring.

For ADSL locations, the $200 professional installation charge covers inspection of existing inside wire and installation of signal blockers or a NID splitter if necessary, up to a maximum of 30 minutes. Additional inside wiring is not available for ADSL by AT&T; however, you can contract with an outside vendor.
Does AT&T support a specific type of Inside Wiring?

There are two levels of inside wiring for business service customers: SDSL and ADSL/IDSL.

  • Standard - No additional charges apply, included with the service setup fee.
  • Additional - Billable service charges apply.

A third level of inside wiring, known as Extensive, is not supported by AT&T.

What is Standard Inside Wiring?

Standard inside wiring is provided as part of the DSL installation and usually can be completed within a 15-minute time frame. It consists of the following activities:

  • Positive identification of a new circuit delivered to the end user's phone box or Network Interface Device (NID).
  • Toning, tracing and cross connects on existing inside wiring between the new circuit at the NID and the end user designated jack location.
  • Wiring of the existing or new jack for the CPE, where existing pairs are available and the quality of the wiring are sufficient to support the service.
  • CPE configuration and line test.
  • Any inside wiring that the Field Service Technician (FST) can complete within 15 minutes.

What is Additional Inside Wiring?

Additional inside wiring may be required as part of the DSL installation depending on the quality of the wiring and whether you have special wiring requests. To qualify as Additional (and not Extensive) inside wiring, the work must be doable within a two-hour time frame. It usually involves the following types of activities:

  • Tracing and testing existing wire through multiple units, stories, or telephone closets.
  • Moving an existing jack to another location.
  • Service location is greater than one floor above phone box location and requires new wiring.
  • Service location is greater than 50 feet from phone box location and requires new wiring.
  • Other complex wiring situations where physical laying of cable or wiring is required.
  • Greater than 15 minutes time spent trying to gain access to any phone box, closet or NID.

What is Extensive Inside Wiring?

AT&T does not support Extensive inside wiring and will close orders at the NID with outstanding Inside Wiring issues (see next section). Examples of Extensive inside wiring are as follows:

  • There are no available pairs from the NID to the desired router location.
  • Tracing and testing existing wire through multiple units, multiple stories, multiple NIDs, or multiple telephone closets in a high-rise building, open area public places, or business park;
  • New wiring that would exceed 2 hours of FST wiring due to service location being far from phone box (NID);
  • Excessive drilling through walls or other cosmetic situation such as ceramic or marble baseboards.
  • Wiring from the NID to a desired location (that exceeds distance limitations).
  • Moving an existing jack to another location (that exceeds distance limitations).

What happens if I decide to have an outside vendor complete my Inside Wiring?

AT&T will confirm that the DSL is successfully installed to the Network Interface Device (NID) and close the order.

I only required 15 minutes of inside wiring; will I be charged $100?

No. You will not be charged the fee. Only if the length of time to complete the inside wiring is greater than 15 minutes would you be charged a fee.

If the building manager does not allow AT&T to complete inside wiring, but service is installed at the NID, will I be billed?

Yes. Billing begins at test and turn-up..

If I am not available at the time the technician arrives, will I be charged?

Yes. If you are not present to grant access to the FST at the time of the installation appointment, then you will incur Missed Appointment Fee ($100 per occurrence) in order to have the FST return to complete the appointment.
